Abstract

Since 1962 the observatories of the southern and northern hemisphere have been working jointxyon meridian observations of the programs of the “Southern Reference Stars (SRS)”. The SRS catalogue will contain about 20000 stars, which will give a chance to use it as a reference catalogue for photographic astrometry of the southern sky. It was suggested that the SRS observations be reduced in the fundamental catalogue system. However, shortly after the commencement of the work it came out that the RA of FK4 stars southwards of -10° in decl. have large systematic and accidental errors. In 1973 a suggestion was made that a preliminary improvement of the RA system of FK4 stars should be made before using it for the SRS.
