Abstract

Lakes of various regions of continental United States and Canada are characterized. North-eastern and Rocky Mountain lakes are predominantly useful for trout and allied species, while those of other areas are managed for a wide variety of species. Major management problems are discussed and current management practices for different fish populations are outlined. Population and habitat control are major management tools. Fish planting has limited use but is effective when properly applied. Major research needs for management include study of fish toxicants, methods of population control, fish planting techniques, and methods of evaluating natural hatches.
