Abstract

Within the framework of the EU power plant conceptual study (PPCS), a modular He-cooled divertor concept has been investigated at the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe in cooperation with the Efremov Institute since 2002. The design goal is to withstand a high heat flux of about 10–15 MW/m 2, a value which is considered relevant for the demonstration reactor DEMO which will presumably start its operation in 2038. Several design options with different heat transfer mechanisms are being investigated, with an iterative approach involving the fields of design, analyses, materials and fabrication technology, and experiments always being necessary. The status and first results of these investigations shall be reported and discussed.
