Abstract

The emerging efforts in development and application of expert systems (ES) in medicine are reflected by the number of publications and systems. An analysis of the workshop “Artificial Intelligence in Medicine 1987” in Seattle/USA and AIME 87 in Marseille/France shows trends to an increasing application of ES in the therapeutic area. The exact status of the development and usage of ES can determined by methods of technology assessment (TA). Results of evaluations of the contributions to AIME 87 and information collected from different surveys are presented and discussed. Finally the needs for research in the application of methods of artificial intelligence (AI) to medical problems are pointed out.
