Abstract

Objective To discuss the happiness index and self-management ability of the elderly in Northeast; to help the elderly lead a healthy, civilized and scientific life style and behavior; and to provide a reliable basis for the improvement of northeast community aged nursing. Methods Self-made questionnaires were sent to the elderly in the capital cities of Northeast China. 1 709 questionnaires were distributed. The effective recovery was 1 690, and the recovery rate was 98. 89%. Results The elderly daily life could be basically self -cared. High prevalence of chronic diseases and mental health were positively correlated to the social support. Living environment, general knowledge of illness care, health education were highly required. Among the so-called healthy elderly, in other words elderly with no significant organ disease, were 16% to 20%. Over 80% of the elderly were suffering from various chronic diseases. A few numher of the elderly were suffering from serious diseases. Conclusions Self-management ability of the elderly affects their life satisfaction. Community management staffs and medical staffs need to continue the implementation of health education to improve healthy behavior of the elderly. Meanwhile,social support is also an important factor in the happiness index. Key words: The elderly; Happiness index; Self-management
