Abstract

Statistical data represents one of the major sources of geographical discussion. China has a long tradition in this domain, but the statistics published are often unsatisfactory, in quantity as much as in quality. Firstly, this study snows that the Chinese territory has always been shrouded in secrecy in terms of statistics. The study then identifies the diverse factors related to the imprecision of statistics in China : the gigantic size of the territory and of the population, the transition process, the one-party system, and the geopolitical stakes. The third part details the statistical uncertainties concerning economic and social geography, demogeographics, and the geography of health.
