Abstract

Statistics Journey Fetter (bio) A bird floats unfamiliar against the west coast, fled from one disaster or another. Feathers matted from the windno longer carrying him, he swims face down. Slow waves. He’s not a tanager until the sand gently takes him, lays him steady for us to see. Fear of burningburned into his black bead of an eye. His songsubmerged for some time. The body is heavywith sea—dusting of red on his face. Yellow stomach, black wingsmade blacker with water. I think of the October storm—the dog crying, the wind shaking. How hysterical, the balcony doors. Still, morning came. And there were nests and eggs. But no bodies. [End Page 271] Journey Fetter JOURNEY FETTER is a recent MFA graduate.
