Abstract

Abstract We determine statistics of ion-induced electron emission from metal surfaces bombarded with noble gas ions in different charge states. By comparing such statistics for isoenergetic ions of different charge and using a deconvolution technique, the statistics for respective contributions due to potential electron emission can be separated. Our first measurements involved bombardment of polycrystalline gold under UHV conditions with 2-20 keV He q+ (q=1, 2), Ne q+ (q≤3) and Ar q+ (q⩽4). The potential emission for impact of He2+ is investigated in some detail.
