Abstract
Abstract For model and experimental systems, the comparative wrinkling of expanding gels has been found previously to agree in a qualitative sense. Here, quantitative comparison is conducted using recent developments in the statistical crystallography of random, space-filling patterns. Agreement is found with Aboav-Weaire's and Lewis's law for both model and experiment; lattice parameters are calculated and the statistics of model patterns are compared to experimental results. In recent experimental investigations of polymer gels, Tanaka and co-workers [1, 2] observed transient surface patterns on spherical gels expanding in solvents. These patterns arise from elastic frustration effects and have been modeled numerically [3] to arrive at deformation profiles. These computed profiles show good qualitative agreement with actual experiments [2]; both generate cellular surface patterns with similarly irregular lattice filling.
