Abstract

Indian forestry is one of the oldest profession. Quantification of forest resources was an important component of forest management in the latter half of the nineteenth century in India, replacing comprehensive reports of administrators, mostly written by botanists and medicos. The distinctive role of statistics in Indian forests was recognized with the establishment of Indian Forest Department in the year 1864. The application of statistics over time has been extended from forest administration to forestry research (primarily silviculture, trade in forest products, biodiversity conservation, etc.). This chapter traces the history of quantification of forest resources and the use of statistical methods for the development of forestry sector in India.
