Abstract

The statistical thermodynamics of the multilayer adsorption of binary gas and liquid mixtures on energetically homogeneous solid surfaces is formulated. The theoretical considerations are presented for mixtures containing components of identical molecular sizes. For bilayer adsorption the isotherm equations are derived and are compared with those known from the literature. For a general adsorption model assuming multilayer formation, however, only the canonical partition functions and the equations defining the equilibrium state are discussed.
