Abstract

The properties of a substance in the liquid-crystalline state are intermediate between the properties of a liquid and a crystalline solid. There is no long-range translational order in both liquids and in liquid crystals. At the same time, the long-range orientational order is preserved in the liquid-crystalline phase of a molecule, i.e., liquid crystals are anisotropic, similar to crystalline solids.
