Abstract

Channel capacity is one of the important metric which defines the maximum transmission rate of a channel. Originally, Shannon derived channel capacity, which was proposed for AWGN channel. In this paper, a statistical modeling of channel capacity for maximum ratio Combiner (MRC) in log normal fading channels has been considered. The probability density function (PDF) of instantaneous channel capacity has been derived by using change of variable. We have found that the PDF of channel capacity is not bell shaped for higher variance σ dB . Furthermore, we have proposed Holtzman approximation based approach to compute nth moments of channel capacity. The new explicit expressions are also provided for different adaptive transmission policies such as optimal power and rate adaptation (OPRA), optimal rate adaptation (ORA), Channel inversion with fixed rate (CIFR) and Truncated CIFR (TIFR).
