Abstract

The pulse trains in the EDM process generally contain the successive, similar and stochastic characteristics, and the commonly employed pulse type discrimination is insufficient to retrieve all these properties. In this paper new statistical techniques are proposed for the analysis of pulse trains of an 80 volt iso-energy generator in EDM process. For the pulse type analysis so as to obtain the similar and stochastic features of the pulse trains, range segmentation of the probability distribution of ignition delay time is proposed to replace more difficult to obtain Gamma distribution parameters besides pulse type discrimination. To analyze the successive property of the pulse trains, the relative frequency of the successive good sparks (normal discharges and effective arcs) or bad sparks (arcs and short circuits) are proposed. This analysis is assisted by the autocorrelation function of ignition delay time series. Pulse trains of practical machining are analyzed by the proposed methods. It is found that their characteristics are revealed more comprehensively, and better knowledge about the process can be obtained.
