Abstract
The statistical fluctuations in energy loss have been measured for O, Si, and S ions, in varying thicknesses of polyethylene naphthalate [PEN, or $({\text{C}}_{7}{\text{H}}_{5}{\text{O}}_{2})$] polymeric foils. The measurements have been performed in the fractional energy-loss limits $\ensuremath{\Delta}E/E\ensuremath{\sim}5--90\text{ }%$. These fluctuations have been found to be enhanced with an increase in $\ensuremath{\Delta}E/E$. Such a behavior has been reproduced by Bethe-Livingston formulation after modifying it suitably.
