Abstract

Inflammatory processes of the oromaxillofacial area remain a life-threatening medical and surgical emergency. One of the most severe complications associated with life-threatening OMF area infections is descending mediastinitis. Mediastinitis has an important place in the structure of oro-maxillofacial pathology both by its fulminant progression and the intensity of its manifestations. Mediastinitis in the OMF area occurs in the form of a strong inflammatory response of the mediastinal connective tissue as a result of the action of polymicrobial infection, with an increasing incidence and an equally high lethality of 70-80%. As one of the morbidity causes of OMF pathologies, with decreased immunity and work capacity of patients, polyvisceral damage coupled with septic shock, mediastinitis results in a significant impact on patients’ quality of life.
