Abstract

The neutron spectrum from the decay of the monopole giant resonance in /sup 208/Pb is calculated using the known energy levels of /sup 207/Pb. The particle vibrator model is used to assign spins and parities to the measured /sup 207/Pb levels, where these were not available from experiments. The result of the Hauser-Feshbach calculation is in excellent agreement with the experimental spectrum, showing that the observed fast neutrons can be completely explained assuming a statistical decay.
