Abstract

Sediment, soil and rock samples, collected in and around two estuaries of Bombay, India during three seasons were analysed for major and trace elements, size parameters and mineralogy. Liner discriminant analysis on the trace element data of sediment, soil and rock suggested an anthropogenic contribution of trace elements in sediments. Textural studies of sediment samples revealed the dominance of a clay fraction. From the mineralogical studies the dominance of montmorillonite and kaolinite types of clay minerals were also observed. The dominance of finer particles and the presence of clay minerals may be responsible for the adsorption of trace elements in the sediment.
