Abstract

The nonlinear propagation of an intense circularly polarized electromagnetic wave in a plasma due to a weak relativistic mass variation of plasma electrons has been studied. In the limit of a small strength parameter, the condition for the electromagnetic wave to form a stationary localized envelope wave in an overdense plasma has been obtained in terms of the strength parameter. Also, it is shown that the cylindrical envelope wave is unstable to an s state perturbation, whereas the envelope wave is stable to a p state perturbation. Furthermore, the growth rates are proportional to the strength parameter.
