Abstract

The mathematical structure of the two-fluid MHD equations including plasma-neutral interaction is investigated. An elliptic system is obtained for the plasma density and the electric potential. These equations exhibit a strong similarity to the hydrodynamic equations of thermal convection. The set of equations is applied to a toroidal magnetic field with and without shear and it is shown that magnetic irregularities may cause appreciable convection.
