Abstract

Experimental (Xe, Kr) and theoretical (Xe) hot luminescence (HL) data are presented for the atomic cryocrystals Xe and Kr. The experimental spectra were registered under two-photon excimer laser (ArF and KrF) excitation. The theoretical treatment was based on a new nonperturbative quantum-mechanical relaxation theory, which predicts sharp acceleration of the decay rate around a characteristic “critical” vibrational level of a strong local mode. The time-resolved HL spectra were calculated for the quasi-molecules Xe*2 in solid Xe, taking account of all bound-bound and bound-free transitions in the centre.
