Abstract

The relationship between secondary ion emission and adsorbate structure is further investigated by an in-situ comparison of experimental static SIMS and High Resolution Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (HREELS) data for CO adsorption on Pd(100). The study permits a clarification of the SSIMS fragmentation pattern for a doubly-bridged CO overlayer at low coverages. Coverage dependent changes in the relative amounts of linear and bridged CO bands from HREELS correlate closely with the proportion of PdCO + and Pd 2CO + ions from SSIMS. The consistency of these results with earlier SSIMS studies on a variety of metal surfaces is discussed along with the effects of substrate geometry, adsorbate binding energy and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions on secondary ion emission.
