Abstract
The potentials between heavy quarks corresponding to the ground state and excited states of the gluon field are studied in pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory at β = 6.0 and β = 6.2 using blocked lattice operators. The lowest excited potential is found to correspond to the E u symmetry of the gluon field. The relation of the results to string model predictions is discussed. The heavy quark hybrid meson spectrum in the low-lying excited potentials is evaluated for the cc¯ and bb¯ systems.
