Abstract

A method based on the Thomas-Fermi model for the electrostatic potential is proposed to calculate the multipole polarizabilities α K of atoms and ions. In the case of highly charged ions an equation having a simple analytical form is derived. The dipole α1 and quadrupole α2 polarizabilities of atoms and ions with more than half-filled electron shells are calculated.
