Abstract

SummaryDuring 3 to 4½ years static and mobile atmospheric exposure of laboratory prepared plated ABS plastic panels many adhesion failures have occurred on panels without copper undercoats, while the use of a copper undercoat beneath a thin nickel deposit caused deterioration in appearance owing to the extensive brown staining which occurred. The performance of a given copper-nickel-chromium system was increased by an increase in the total nickel thickness of the deposit The various combinations of copper, nickel and chromium used included some of those recommended in BS 4601:1970 for use in outdoor environments. Tests were carried out in the UK, Germany, Italy, Holland and Australia.
