Abstract

Abstract The responses of Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (YAG) to Vickers indentation and uniaxial compression were investigated over a wide range of strain rates. Planar impact tests were carried out to explore the behavior of YAG against high strain rate compression. In comparison with static indentation, dynamic indentation shows a prominent increase in hardness and brittleness. Uniaxial compression strength of YAG also displays a noticeable ascending trend at the strain rates ranging from 10−4 to 103 s−1 while the fragment size recovered from uniaxial compression tests decrease with an increase in the strain rate. Hugoniot elastic limit and maximum spall strength of YAG are around 10.36 and 0.95 GPa, respectively.
