Abstract

Occupational therapists sought a protocol to consistently measure the effects of facial scars on the movement of the mouth, eyelids and neck and to clearly document the location and quality of multiple scars on the face and neck. The full body diagram used with the Modified Vancouver Scar Scale did not allow a detailed and accurate rating of multiple facial and neck scars. Also, a complete protocol to measure limitations of mouth, eyelid and neck movements caused by scar tissue was not found in a literature search. A protocol and a concise recording form were developed that measured mouth and eyelid closure, mouth opening and neck extension and rotation. The location of scar tissue was documented on a diagram of the head and neck with detailed facial features and 8 anatomical points to divide the face and neck into 8 zones. The least mature scar in each facial zone was rated for pliability, height, pigment, and vascularity using the Modified Vancouver Scar Scale (MVSS).
