Abstract

Transfer functions are important in general system analysis and are essentially concerned with input-output relations, very often a single input and a single output. State-variable analysis is also concerned with input-output relations but places in evidence the internal structure of a system, which is not evident with transfer functions. Much simple closed-loop system design is carried out with transfer functions and it is important to establish the relation between transfer-function and state-variable representations of open- and closed-loop systems, and also to extend this to cover conventional compensation methods.
