Abstract

A workshop on the State-of-the-Art and Prospects for Magnetic, Electronic and Mechanical Applications of Amorphous Metals was held on November 20 – 21, 1975, to provide a forum for discussions of the potential applications of amorphous metals and their related physical properties. The 150 attendees of the ONR Materials Workshop at Northeastern University, Boston, included representatives from academia, industry and government, many of whom had also participated in the immediately preceding Second International Conference on Rapidly Quenched Metals held at M.I.T. Half-day sessions were devoted to: (1) preparation and characterization, (2) mechanical applications and (3) magnetic and electronic applications. While statements at the workshop were not for attribution, this report seeks to present a synopsis of the views which were expressed. Although amorphous metals are clearly highly promising for technology, it is indicated that a large amount of essential research and development lies ahead.
