Abstract

The new millennium has marked a dramatic proliferation in the ways by which users are involved in various product, service, space and systems development activities. Particularly digital services and platforms have enabled new kinds of user involvement configurations across time and space. These important changes in the user involvement “landscape” tend to remain unnoticed or misunderstood, owing to no small measure to the blurriness of available method mappings. Building on the critique and conceptual development presented in the part one of this paper, we elaborate a typology of nine approach level user involvement configurations. We further elaborate why the user involvement configurations help make sense of some research/practice areas such as service design, participatory design and user innovation research which all factually span several distinct user involvement configuration types – in effect prompting quite different designer roles and orientations within the same research area.
