Abstract

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists is an international professional society of over 9000 geophysicists. Our members represent the geophysical contracting industry, exploration departments from large and small oil companies, government organizations, and the academic world. The greatest number, about two‐thirds, reside in the United States. Our primary purpose is to develop and utilize theoretical and applied geophysical techniques to search for and evaluate the mineral resources required to fill the energy needs of the world. This group, operating under a competitive free enterprise system, has continued to push technology forward to meet the increasing demands for energy by the free world. After reviewing S-1864, the Energy Information Act, we feel that certain provisions in the act would do irreparable harm to the geophysical industry and drastically curtail geophysical activity. We have already witnessed a steady decrease in U.S. geophysical activity since July 1974 due to adverse government legislation and regulations, as shown by the most recent geophysical activity report filed with the FEA by the SEG.
