Abstract

A state variable constitutive model for the volumetric creep behavior of fine‐grained marine clay is presented. The form of the model is motivated by laboratory data for undisturbed illite. Model parameters are evaluated by least squares methods using data from single‐step and double‐step loading conditions. The model is implemented in a saturated, creeping, porous media finite element code and is used to simulate the volumetric deformations of clay under laboratory conditions.
