Abstract

A simulation of a MHO distance relay is developed to study the effect of its operation under various system conditions. Simulation is accomplished using a state-space approach and a modeling technique using the ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) and Transient Analysis of Control Systems (TACS). EMTP allows the representation of power systems as well as their components. In addition, transmission line surges and other high-frequency transient phenomena can be studied with EMTP. The EMTP modeling technique TACS is employed to develop this relay model. Simulation results are compared with those obtained in another independent study as a control, to validate the results. A data code for the practical utilization of this simulation is given. Because the model can accept waveforms from potential and current transformers, projections of harmonic and transient behavior of relays during a system contingency are possible. >
