Abstract

Cold-formed steel members find their extensive applications in aerospace and civil engineering structures, especially when light weight members will suffice, thus achieving substantial economy. They are also used when the requirements of the shape prevent the use of hot-rolled steel members. Connections play a key role in determining whether or not a structure will reach its computed ultimate load because plastic hinges are usually formed at the intersection of two or more members. Connection design is important in the design of structures formed using cold-formed steel sections because of its thinness of the material. The economy achieved for relatively light loads, short spans and the unusual sectional configurations is the main reason for their increased use in building industry. Cold-formed steel elements are quality-assured materials that are suitable for mass construction. Highly efficient structural forms can be produced with proper design. This study on cold formed steel is done for the better understanding of the cold formed steel and its advantages owing to which it can be used effectively. The review also identifies the challenges and highlights the future directions of research to increase the acceptance and use of emerging composite repair systems.
