Abstract

Abnormalities of the placenta can have long-term implications on fetal and maternal health. Imaging with ultrasound, and sometimes magnetic resonance imaging, is the only means of observing the placenta in vivo, hence playing a significant role in clinical and research efforts for early detection of placental abnormalities. We present a review of placental morphology, imaging appearance of normal placenta and placental abnormalities such as placental implantation disorders and intrauterine growth restriction with emphasis on role of advanced imaging techniques. We hope the review will encourage the readers to give the placenta its much deserved second look.
