Abstract
We discuss recent developments in the area of conventional cryptographic primitives: encryption algorithms (block ciphers and stream ciphers), MAC algorithms, and hash functions. The security level and software performance of these primitives is compared. A summary is given of the status of the development of the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), which will replace DES in the near future.
