Abstract

This paper studies in detail the state evaluation and typical damages of Steel and composite structures(concrete plus steel) of the National Roadway Network , without include seismic evaluation. The studies is based in the inventory and the inspections made by the Colombian Government’s Roads Institute (Invias) since 1996, throughout the Colombian Bridge Management System (Sipucol). This paper is divided in two parts: the first one presents a brief description of the different types of steel bridges and composite structures based on the Sipucol inventory module and the second one presents the state and typical damages of the main components. Of the 244 steel and composite structures bridges of the National Roadway Network, they presents structural deficiencies, widespread and partial corrosion, infiltration, not appropriate unions details, presence of fatigue problems in the unions and poor quality in welded unions. It is considered that this paper will be the base for a further and more comprehensive investigation of structures that are vital in the road infrastructure like the bridges, in order to advance in the detailed inspection including seismic vulnerability analysis, and conservation of steel bridges topics. Keywords: Types of bridges, steel bridges, typical damages, visual inspection, corrosion and fatigue
