Abstract

Quantitative aspects and the future of Animal Sciences are reported, resulting from a survey of National and EU documents and from personal evaluations of selected scientists. In the University for animal sciences 395 units are employed, 226 in Faculties of Agriculture, 161 in Faculties of Veterinary Sciences and 8 in other Faculties. Approximately other 165 units are involved in animal research in public or private boards. In practice, nearly 70% of the researchers in Animal Sciences in Italy are in Universities. Several funding sources are available to Animal Sciences, while not all of them are specifically addressing the specific issues. On the whole the percentage of funding is quite low, e.g. only 1.4% of the total PBIN funding is granted to Animal Sciences. The scientific production of Italian animal scientists is comparable with the European one regarding the most investigated research topics, but on the whole high quality papers are not so many.North America and Europe demonstrate different priorities in the fields of research: more attention to nutrition in the USA more to Production, Management and Health in Europe, if the evaluation is made on the gTeat interdisciplinary meetings and we leave out genetics that is concentrated in specialised symposia. North America and Europe are more similar regarding the priority topics of research: quality and alimentary safety for the human health, sustainability, environment; new technosciences: molecular biotechnologies for omic sciences (genomics, pro-teomics, etc), nanosciences, infosciences.
