Abstract
Abstract This chapter surveys the history of Russian industrialization. It begins by exploring its roots in the nineteenth century; continues with an examination of the Soviet period; and concludes with a survey of developments over the post-Soviet decades. Our focus is on the dual role that markets and state policies have played in fostering, accelerating, and hindering Russian industrial development during all three periods. We provide a unified empirical picture of the industrial sector for the entire period, highlight the interactions of Russian and Soviet industry with the global economy, and emphasize the importance of the Russian case for understanding the possibilities of late industrialization.
