Abstract

Up to now, the startup of HT-PEMFC is either requiring starting temperatures of 80 {degree sign}C or more, or will result in a significant cell degradation. In this contribution, investigations on low temperature startup and shutdown procedures are presented. These procedures allow the reduction of the startup temperature down to levels in the range of 60 {degree sign}C without permanently damaging the cell, thus allowing to strongly reduce time and auxiliary energy demand for cell startup. The startup procedure is derived from water vapour pressure data of H3PO4 and is investigated using modelling techniques. The results were experimentally confirmed by repeated startup cycles for different operation parameter sets.
