Abstract

Immigration is widespread and inevitable. Political, economic and social reasons drive people around the world to seek a different or a better life than their current one. There is a long history of healthcare workers moving to other countries to learn or work. This article briefly discusses midwifery in Canada, and the experiences of two midwives who have immigrated there. Sonje came from South Africa, where she had worked in a high-volume birth centre, and the author emigrated from the UK, where she had worked in both hospital and community settings.
