Abstract

THE POPULAR BELIEF is that most scientists and engineers have become interested in such careers during the high school years. Most often credit is given to a particularly inspiring science teacher. A comparatively new school of thought insists that you should start teaching science much earlier than this. Randolph B. Smith, director of the Little Red School House, a private school in New York City, is a leading exponent of this approach. Curiosity about the world is at its highest level when a child is four, five, or six, according to Smith, and he appears to be amply prepared to prove his point. He stresses the importance of starting a child's scientific education in the nursery school and giving it increasing emphasis each school year.
