Abstract

We propose a novel scheme to decelerate a cw precooled molecular beamby using an optical Stark decelerator, which is composed of ared-detuned cw semi-Gaussian beam. The dynamical process of the opticalStark deceleration for a cw methane molecular beam is studied byMonte Carlo simulations. It is realized that the proposed opticalStark decelerator can be used to continuously slow a cw methanemolecular beam with a longitudinal temperature of 30 mK, and a maximumreduction in the most probable speed of 0.388 m/s (corresponding to arelative change of 9.93%) can be obtained by using a singlesemi-Gaussian beam with a power of 500 W and a maximum central intensityof about 7.96×107 W/cm2.
