Abstract

We report on a method of electron densities determination in high-pressure mercury discharges by using the width of the 690.7 nm mercury line which is very sensitive to charged particles. We reproduce the line profile emitted from a high-pressure mercury discharge by a model based upon the impact approximation and propose a formula giving electron densities as a function of the 690.7 nm line width; we also show a small dependence of the line width on the neutral densities.
