Abstract

Coated in reverential humor that pays homage to the franchise’s rich history, Lower Decks goes where no other Star Trek series has gone before. Set a year after the events of Star Trek Nemesis (2002), the show tells the story of the crew of the Cerritos, a starship tasked with Second Contact operations. Through its considerable use of meta humor, the series takes a critical, yet loving look at Star Trek history with a cast that exemplifies both the best and the worst in the franchise. Unlike other series in the past, LWR is less concerned with capturing or commenting on the zeitgeist, or even exploring utopian ideals, and more interested in exploring what it means to be a Star Trek fan in the early twenty-first century by way of the late twenty-fourth. Still in its relative infancy, it remains to be seen if the series will be anything more than that.
