Abstract
The ITU telecommunication standardization sector (ITU‐T) provides standards covering all fields of telecommunications on an international basis. The study group (SG) most relevant to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is SG15: Optical and Other Transport Networks. The optical internetworking forum (OIF) performs interoperability testing and builds market awareness and promotes education for technologies, services, and solutions. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards Association (IEEE‐SA) is one of the leading consensus‐building bodies with regard to global technologies. Internet engineering task force (IETF) Working Groups are the primary mechanism for the development of IETF specifications and guidelines, many of which are intended to be standards or recommendations. International Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) coordinates technical standards activity between (American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in the United States and joint International Organization Standardization (ISO)/International Electro technical Commission (IEC) committees worldwide.
