Abstract
There must be standards and guidelines for the determination of odour strengths using dynamic olfactometry so that reliable, reproducible results can be obtained. Because of inability to critically judge many odour intensities presented to both the Environment Protection Authority of NSW (EPA NSW) and the Sydney Water Board (now Sydney Water), these groups jointly looked at overseas and local experiences in 1994 to produce guidelines covering methods for sample collection, sample handling, olfactometry and calculation of results. The draft guidelines were discussed with interested parties. It is intended that these guidelines be followed for any olfactometry carried out for the NSW EPA or Sydney Water. The guidelines are still in a state of flux with some details yet to be decided.
