Abstract

Purpose: The Heart Rhythm Society recommends two medications to be prescribed after an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) implantation for patients with EF < 40%. The recommended medications are beta blockers and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) These medications have been well established as front line treatment in patients with heart failure who often need ICD implantation in prevention of sudden cardiac death. Long term beta blocker therapy can improve symptoms of heart failure, improve patient clinical status, and reduce hospitalizations and mortality.
