Abstract

A great many investigations in neutron physics require precise absolute measurements. These absolute measurements are of two kinds: the absolute determination of source strengths and the absolute measurement of fluxes in bulk media or in free neutron beams. Absolute source strength measurements are necessary in all investigations of neutron-producing nuclear reactions, especially ν- and η-measurements on fissionable substances. Absolute flux measurements are a necessity in many cross section measurements (cf. Chapter 4); they are also the basis of neutron dosimetry, particularly in nuclear reactors. The problems of absolute flux and source strength measurement are naturally quite intimately connected.
