Abstract

India has its typical socio-economic environment, which makes it a unique nation. Despite typical challenges, India has shown tremendous potential for economic growth, and gradually it is emerging as one of the world’s largest economies. It is happening because India has already established a suitable institutional mechanism and is continuously striving to develop a robust domestic Quality Infrastructure (QI). The QI mainly comprises Metrology, Standardization, and Accreditation. Historically, the journey of India was started with the foundation of the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) and National Physical Laboratory, India (NPLI), in the year of 1947. Further, it passes through pre- and post-days of globalization; reform initiatives taken up by the Government; the impact of ever-changing technology and industry/business trends, and comprehensive changes in global trade due to the advent of the World Trade Organization (WTO) regime. Further, the progress is going on in the context of contemporary advancements. The chapter is an effort to get a holistic overview of major verticals which influence trade and economic growth across the globe, exploration of existing institutional mechanisms for Indian QI, ongoing activities to maintain sustainable economic growth, and futuristic challenges in this arena.KeywordsQuality infrastructureStandardization, Regulatory ecosystem
